Myeloma and AML: clues to underactive immune cells

Certain T cells in bone marrow samples recognize cancer cells but appear insufficiently activated.

A Heidelberg team examined bone marrow samples from 21 people with multiple myeloma or acute myeloid leukemia. A 15-gene signature helped distinguish tumor-reactive T cells.

DKFZ presented the findings on 10 August 2026. The signature is not a routine test. Larger prospective studies are needed, and key experiments were performed outside the body. Reliable killing of tumor cells has not yet been directly demonstrated.
