What is this trial about?
Acute myeloid leukemia (AML) requires intensive and often complex treatment, with treatment approaches and chances of cure varying depending on genetic alterations and the course of the disease. The goal of the SAL study is to establish a registry of patients with AML. As comprehensive a set of medical data as possible regarding disease characteristics and progression will be collected to advance our understanding of the disease and improve treatment options. Women and men aged 18 and older who have AML are eligible to participate. Patients with a specific form of AML, known as promyelocytic leukemia (APL), may also participate in the study.

Detailed description
Acute leukemias are rare but rapidly progressing, aggressive forms of cancer that arise from immature white blood cells or bone marrow cells and usually spread very quickly. The malignant leukemia cells develop in the bone marrow and displace the healthy bone marrow, preventing the production of sufficient functional blood cells. In cases of this disease, patients frequently experience infections, bleeding, reduced performance, and shortness of breath. In acute myeloid leukemia (AML), the precursors of the so-called myeloid cell line of white blood cells (leukocytes) are altered.
AML is classified into different subtypes based on various genetic changes in the leukemia cells. By closely examining these changes, treatment can be better tailored to the individual patient to make the therapy as targeted and effective as possible.
The goal of this registry study is to collect various data from patients with acute myeloid leukemia (AML) in order to gain a better understanding of the disease. To this end, data on diagnosis, therapy, disease progression, and treatment success will be collected over a period of up to 10 years. In addition, tissue and blood samples will be collected from the patients. This data will help identify risk factors for the development of AML and further develop treatment approaches. Patients will be monitored throughout the course of their illness. This is a purely observational study, which means that no additional tests or treatments will be performed. Participation will not affect medical care.
Women and men aged 18 and older who have acute myeloid leukemia (AML) or acute promyelocytic leukemia (APL) are eligible to participate in the study. Patients can participate in the study at any stage of the disease.
