CytoVI: AI supports the analysis of blood cancer cells
A research model analyses measurements of individual cells. In CLL, its results closely matched specialist assessments.
Researchers developed CytoVI to make measurements of individual cells more comparable. Flow cytometry uses lasers to measure cell properties. The model accounts for technical differences between measurements and identifies cell groups. The study appeared in Nature Methods on 30 September 2026.
In routine diagnostic data from chronic lymphocytic leukaemia (CLL), CytoVI identified typical cancer cells. Detecting very small numbers of these cells, for example after treatment, remains challenging. The software is intended to support medical assessment; improved treatment outcomes for patients have yet to be demonstrated.
